The posters in Paris say “more than 250,000 viewers already”. That might sound negligible for larger film productions, but for a small film from Saudi-Arabia it is quite impressive. A surprise hit in France as well as in other European countries, Wadjda by Haifaa Al Mansour, the first Saudi female filmmaker in history, has charmed critics and viewers alike with a simple yet thought-provoking story.
Peru’s relatively small cinema industry has produced a number of films addressing the country’s class division (for more information, look up Grupo Chaski), more often than not depicting the story from the point of view of the oppressed. For a change, director Josué Méndez’s Gods (Dioses) is a social commentary from the point of view of the upper class.
